protected by a screen

There’s something strangely comforting about hiding behind a screen. The distance it creates, the invisible wall that separates you from the world. It lets you say things you might never say in person, and somehow, it feels safe. You can control the narrative. You can edit your thoughts, your words, your tone, until they fit into this perfectly curated version of yourself.

But there’s a catch. Because if anyone were to discover it’s you behind the screen, the game would be up. You’d stop being the voice of wisdom, or the witty commentator, they’d see you. See you as human. And that’s terrifying. Because once they know it’s you, once they realize the mess you’ve been hiding behind those well-placed words, they might start questioning everything. The perfect persona, the carefully chosen thoughts, the polished version of yourself, it starts to crumble. They’d see that you’re no different from anyone else, a person just trying to survive, just trying to make sense of the chaos. And in their eyes, you’d no longer be some untouchable figure or an idea. You’d just be human.

So, you keep it to yourself. You write, but you don’t let anyone get too close, you don’t let anyone know it’s you. You hide behind that screen, keeping your real self locked away. You protect that version of yourself that feels safe from the world’s judgment. Because if they knew it was you, the real you, the one with flaws, mistakes, days where you just don’t want to get out of bed…then what? Would they still read your words? Would they still care about what you have to say? Or would they see all the cracks and turn away, too afraid to confront the human underneath?

It’s easier to stay hidden. Easier to keep them at arm’s length, to keep writing from behind the safety of a screen, where you’re not exposed. Because once they know who you really are, once they discover the person behind the words, you’ll never be able to go back. You’ll never be able to pretend that you’ve got it all together, that everything’s perfect. You’ll be seen for what you are: a human being, messy and flawed, scared, just like everyone else.

But as long as you stay behind that screen, you’re still in control. You can share as much or as little of yourself as you want. You can create the illusion of perfection, of having it all figured out, while you keep the real you hidden away. And maybe, just maybe, that’s the only way you can keep going, by never letting them discover the truth. Because once they do, you’ll no longer be the one they admire from a distance. You’ll just be another person, struggling to make sense of the world. And the screen? It won’t protect you anymore.
